Nonbinary
Nonbinary is a term used to describe any person who does not orient themselves with a binary gender (male or female). Nonbinary individuals fit into many categories, such as:
- an androgynous (feminine and masculine) identity
- an unrecognized or neutral identity, such as agender
- an identity that changes over time, known as genderfluid
- intersex, and identifying as intersex
- fitting a culturally specific gender identity existing only within their or their ancestors' culture
Nonbinary people may also identify as transgender/transsexual or genderqueer. Although nonbinary and genderqueer are very similar, nonbinary is usually seen as the more accepted term, as "queer" is sometimes considered a transphobic slur.
Some nonbinary people choose to transition so their physical gender expression matches their internal identity, others adopt an androgynous look and clothing style, and some express themselves along the lines of a binary masculine/feminine look.
It is important to respect the chosen pronouns of a non-binary person. While some choose to use she/her or he/him, many nonbinary individuals switch to a neutral pronoun set such as they/them or similar, and/or adopt neutral titles such as Mx. (pronounced "mix").
